Morgan Price’s “Ways of Being” confronts cultural and societal ills

Opening Thursday, March 7 at Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College

Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College welcomes Illinois-based printmaking artist Morgan Price for his exhibition entitled “Ways of Being”, opening Thursday, March 7 in the Edward A. Whitney Gallery. Price will give an artist’s talk at 4 p.m. with a reception to follow at 5 p.m. “Ways of Being” will remain on view until April 14. All Edward A. Whitney Gallery events and exhibitions are free and open to the public.

Price currently teaches lithography and drawing as an assistant professor at Illinois State University and is the vice president of the Mid-America Print Council. As an artist, he has exhibited nationally and internationally, frequently participating in print portfolios, and his work has been featured in several permanent collections.

“I’m excited to have Morgan here to help our students kick off a semester that is really going to celebrate printmaking,” said Brittney Denham, art faculty member. “Price’s work is such a great example of professional printmaking, so it’s a treat to host him and get to share his work with students and the community.”

According to his artist statement, Price is inspired by advertisements, printmaking history, cartoons, film and literature and seeks to tell stories that illustrate personal and societal ills with his work.

“My work reflects the anxieties and concerns that occupy my thoughts, personifying my fears and exaggerating my foibles,” he said. “The mix of seemingly contradictory notions – tenderness and repulsion, humor and seriousness, refinement with sloppiness – reflects the emotional and intellectual ambivalence that inspires me as an artist and a person.”

Price will also teach a printmaking master class to Sheridan College students on Thursday, March 7.

The Edward A. Whitney Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays by appointment.
