Whitney Center Jazz Orchestra: ¡CELEBRACIÓN LATINA!
The Arts at Sheridan College presents the Whitney Center Jazz Orchestra directed by Dr. Eric Richards on Saturday, April 13 at 7 pm in Kinnison Hall at Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College.
The Whitney Center Jazz Orchestra (WCJO) is the professional jazz orchestra in residence at the Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College. This 19-member jazz ensemble is comprised of the finest professional jazz musicians in the region, many of whom serve on the faculties of the University of Wyoming, Montana State University, MSU-Billings, Northwest College, Casper College, and Sheridan College. The Musical Director of the WCJO is composer-arranger-trombonist Dr. Eric Richards, Director of Bands and Jazz Studies at Sheridan College. Eric’s music for jazz orchestra is published worldwide and has been performed on six continents by professional and educational ensembles. Concert venues include Carnegie Hall, the Montreux, North Sea, and Nice Jazz Festivals in Europe, and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Dr. Eric Richards, Director of Bands and Jazz Studies at Sheridan College, is the musical director for the WCJO; he also composes, arranges, and plays the trombone for this group. He said this concert will “pay tribute to the rich and vital influence of the music of Latin America upon the jazz tradition.”
“From Samba to Partido Alto to Bossa to Merengue to Bolero, this concert will offer a rich, colorful tapestry of music,” Richards said. “This is an opportunity to hear a world-class professional big band performing an outstanding and entertaining concert program. We hope you can join us!”
Max Marquis will be featured that evening on baritone saxophone performing Jobim’s classic bossa Wave and singing Sway, the well-known cha-cha made popular by Michael Bublé. The concert will also have guest artist Ed Breazeale on percussion.
Tickets: Adult: $25 Senior/Veteran: $15 Student (K-12, non-SC): $10
