The Hathaway Scholarship (For Wyoming High School Graduates)

Education: The State’s Greatest Investment

The State of Wyoming has established a generous scholarship program in the name of former Wyoming Governor Stan Hathaway that provides an incentive for Wyoming students to prepare for and pursue post-secondary education within the State of Wyoming. The Wyoming Department of Education’s program, which began with the high school graduating class of 2006, provides merit- and need-based awards to eligible students.

Hathaway FAQs

How and how long do I have to apply for the Hathaway Scholarship?

Sheridan College requires a Hathaway Scholarship application. Applications can be submitted online here

Paper applications are also available from the financial aid office. Please send an email to financialaid@sheridan.edu to obtain a paper application. One will be provided to you via email and will require a physical signature.

As of March 19, 2018, students must apply for the Hathaway Scholarship within 48 months (4 years) of their high school class’ natural graduation date. Students must begin using the scholarship within 52 months. For example, a student graduates on May 29, 2022.  This student has until May 29, 2026 to apply and has until fall semester of 2026 to begin using the scholarship.

Homeschooling students have until their 21st birthday to apply for the Hathaway Scholarship.

Students who previously attended a Wyoming high school and earn a high school equivalency certificate [HSEC] (ie. GED, HiSET) must apply for the Hathaway Scholarship within 48 months of their natural high school graduation date. Exceptions may apply for those who have dependents or are court ordered to earn an HSEC.

Other exceptions may be made for documented military service or religious sojourns.

Is there exceptions for military and religious sojourns?

A student must apply for the Hathaway Scholarship within 48 months of their high school graduation date. However, exceptions may be made for documented military service or religious sojourns. These are termed “clock stoppers” for Hathaway purposes.

Military service is documented by providing a DD-214. Religious sojourns should have a call letter from the church and a release certificate after the mission is complete. Please contact the financial aid office for more information..

What requirements must I meet in order to keep the Hathaway Scholarship?

The Hathaway Scholarship is broken down in 4 levels: Honors, Performance, Opportunity, and Provisional Opportunity.

Honors level students must graduate high school with a weighted GPA of 3.50, score an ACT composite of at least 25, and complete the required success curriculum. Once in college, Honors level students must maintain a Hathaway GPA of 2.50 (this is calculated using all courses once the Hathaway Scholarship is initiated), complete all credits in which they are paid each semester, and maintain continuous enrollment each fall and spring semester at a WY school. If the Hathaway GPA drops below 2.50 but is at least 2.25, the Honors level student will receive the Opportunity level until the Hathaway GPA reaches 2.50 again.

Performance level students must graduate high school with a weighted GPA of 3.00, score an ACT composite of at least 21, and complete the required success curriculum. Once in college, Performance level students must maintain a Hathaway GPA of 2.50 (this is calculated using all courses once the Hathaway Scholarship is initiated), complete all credits in which they are paid each semester, and maintain continuous enrollment each fall and spring semester at a Wyoming school. If the Hathaway GPA drops below 2.50 but is at least 2.25, the Performance level student will receive the Opportunity level until the Hathaway GPA reaches 2.50 again.

Opportunity level students must graduate high school with a weighted GPA of 2.50, score an ACT composite of at least 19, and complete the required success curriculum. Once in college, Opportunity level students must maintain a Hathaway GPA of 2.25 (this is calculated using all courses once the Hathaway Scholarship is initiated), complete all credits in which they are paid each semester, and maintain continuous enrollment each fall and spring semester at a Wyoming school.

Provisional Opportunity level students must graduate high school with a weighted GPA of 2.50, score an ACT composite of at least 17, and complete the required success curriculum. Once in college, Provisional Opportunity level students must maintain a Hathaway GPA of 2.25 (this is calculated using all courses once the Hathaway Scholarship is initiated), complete all credits in which they are paid each semester, and maintain continuous enrollment each fall and spring semester at a Wyoming school. This level of the Hathaway Scholarship must be used at a Wyoming community college for the first 48 credits of eligibility.

The Hathaway Scholarship is typically awarded for the full year. If a student loses eligibility after completion of a spring semester, they will be notified via email with instructions how they can regain the Hathaway Scholarship.

How long do I get to use the Hathaway Scholarship?

Students have 6 years from the semester they begin using the Hathaway Scholarship to use all 8 full time semesters (96 credits or 12 credits per semester). Students must meet the continuous enrollment requirement in order to remain eligible. 4 full time semesters (48 credits) are intended for use at a Wyoming community college and 4 full time semesters (48 credits) are intended for use at the University of Wyoming. Any credits you use during a summer semester count towards the 48 total available credits at a WY community college. Extensions may be possible at a Wyoming community college depending upon the Hathaway Scholarship level you are receiving and your program of study.

Exceptions for the 6 year clock may be made for documented military service or religious sojourns. Other restrictions apply. Please contact the financial aid office for more details.

If I take a semester off, will I lose the Hathaway Scholarship?

Students are required to enroll in at least 1 credit each fall and spring semester once they begin receiving the Hathaway Scholarship. Exceptions for the 6 year clock may be made for documented military service or religious sojourns.

An example: a student begins using the Hathaway Scholarship in fall of 2020 but decides to transfer outside of Wyoming or sit out for the spring 2021 semester. They will be required to attend the fall semester of 2021 at the same number of credits they were enrolled during fall of 2020 before the Hathaway Scholarship can be reinstated. Please submit a regain eligibility request to see if you are eligible to regain the Hathaway Scholarship.

Can I use the Hathaway Scholarship for just summer classes?

Remember, all documentation must be received in the financial aid office by the first day of the semester a student wishes to begin receiving the Hathaway Scholarship. Students must submit a final, official high school transcript (showing graduation date), ACT scores, and a Hathaway Scholarship application (either paper or electronic) by the first day of the semester; regardless of fall, spring, or summer. A summer use request is also required.

If you only intend to use the Hathaway Scholarship for summer courses, a summer admission application as a degree-seeking student must also be on file.

Any credits you use during a summer semester count towards the 48 total available credits at a WY community college.

Students are required to enroll in at least 1 credit each fall and spring semester once they begin receiving the Hathaway Scholarship. If a student begins using the Hathaway Scholarship in the summer of 2020 but decides to transfer outside of Wyoming or sit out for any length of time, they will be required to attend a fall or spring semester at the same number of credits they were enrolled during the summer of 2020 before the Hathaway Scholarship can be reinstated. Am I a Wyoming resident?

To qualify for the Hathaway Scholarship, you must be considered a resident of Wyoming according to the Northern Wyoming Community College Districts residency policy which requires the student graduated from a Wyoming high school and/or a student’s parents live in Wyoming. Residency questions can be directed to the Records Office.

Do I have to submit the FAFSA in order to be eligible?

A FAFSA is not required to determine your Hathaway Scholarship eligibility. However, a need based award is available to qualifying students, but the FAFSA must be 100% completed before the financial aid office can determine if you are eligible for the need based portion.

Why is my Hathaway Scholarship amount less than the full amount?

The Hathaway Scholarship is awarded each semester based on enrollment in 12 credits. If a student is enrolled in 6-11 credits in fall or spring (or 1-11 in summer), or is enrolled in a course numbered less than 1000 (eg Math 0920), the Hathaway Scholarship award amount will be prorated accordingly.

I lost my Hathaway Scholarship. How do I get it back?

Students must maintain a specific cumulative GPA, complete the credits they attempt, and remain enrolled every fall and spring semester once they begin receiving the scholarship. Please visit HSP Eligibility Matrix to see what you need to do in order to regain the Scholarship. Then submit the regain eligibility form to the financial aid office for review.

How do I transfer my Hathaway Scholarship?

Students have 48 credits (or 4 full time semesters) to use the Hathaway Scholarship at a Wyoming community college and an additional 48 credits to use at the University of Wyoming. If you want to transfer the Hathaway Scholarship to another Wyoming community college or UW, please submit a Hathaway transfer request to the financial aid office for review.
