Overview

Are you interested in working with animals? Do you want a career in livestock production? Sheridan College’s Animal Science Program gives you the scientific background and skills you need to pursue a rewarding career within the livestock production, veterinary, or research fields.

Our Animal Science Program is available as an associate of science degree. As a student in our Animal Science Program, you will learn best management practices, latest production techniques and marketing skills to provide consumers with a safe, wholesome product.

Gain hands-on experience with growing, caring for, and learning from the animals that are housed in our livestock barn. These animals are utilized for lab class, and students care for these animals on a daily basis learning best management practice. Sheridan College also houses and maintains a flock of free-range hens in our two-acre field lab that helps students gain production and marketing experience through the care of the hens and selling of the eggs.

Sheridan College faculty will assist you toward your education and career goals and work closely with regional universities to help you transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree.

World-Class Facilities

The Sheridan College Agriculture programs are thriving and require additional space to serve students. The Mars Agriculture Center provides the College with a 16,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art building with top-notch learning environments for a variety of disciplines within the Sheridan College Ag Department.

    The livestock barn is a 4,000 sq ft learning space that houses the colleges livestock. It includes 8 pens that allow livestock to access both the inside and outside. Pens are adjustable allowing for animals to be housed in one larger pen when they first arrive providing comfort or housed in individual pens which is necessary when students conduct feeding trials to calculate feed efficiency.

    The new science labs support small laboratory classes in plant science sciences, soil science, animal science, and genetics. They are equipped with a variety of modern technological tools used in these areas of science.

    Over 2.5 acres of field lab space, featuring hop vines, orchard, vineyard, and rangeland plant spaces as well as free range chickens. The hops are harvested every year in collaboration with our local Black Tooth Brewing Company.

    Careers & Industry Outlook

    Animal scientists’ skills are in demand across the nation and globe in a variety of related fields, including livestock reproduction and nutrition, equine anatomy, natural resource management, and microbiology. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that employment of veterinarians is projected to grow 19 percent between 2016 – 2026, much faster than average.

    • Employment of veterinary technologists and technicians is projected to grow 19% from 2022 to 2032, adding about 24,400 jobs according to US Bureau of Labor Statistics

    Associate of Science

    The Associate of Science in Animal Science is an agricultural degree that allows students to gain knowledge and experience in this multi-disciplinary field. Students build upon a foundation of science with hands-on, practical animal science courses in their area of interest.
