Careers & Industry Outlook

The Diesel Technology programs use a hands-on approach to prepare students for a career in the diesel industry. Through courses in engines, electrical, hydraulics, drive trains, electronics, mobile air conditioning, and welding, students develop a safe work attitude and skills required to work on the most advanced diesel-powered vehicles.

Industry Projections

• Demand is average for diesel technology across the state and region. About 25,600 openings for diesel service technicians and mechanics are projected each year, on average, over the decade, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
• The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics also states the median annual wage for diesel service technicians and mechanics was $60,640 in May 2024.

Curriculum & Outcomes

Our Associate of Applied Science Degree in Diesel Technology is one of the most successful and highly regarded in the region. As a student, you will receive not only important hands-on training, but also the best theory and practical teachings for the industry. Our modern labs boast the most up-to-date diagnostic equipment with training on the newest engines from Caterpillar, Cummins, and Detroit Diesel. Smaller class sizes allow you one-on-one learning to hit the ground running in the diesel technology field today.

Program Outcomes

The Diesel Technology AAS Program uses a hands-on approach to prepare students for a career in the diesel industry. Through courses in engines, electrical, hydraulics, drive trains, electronics, mobile air conditioning, and welding, students develop a safe work attitude and skills required to work on the most advanced diesel-powered vehicles.

• Perform diagnostic procedures used in the construction, mining, agricultural, and trucking industry to effectively troubleshoot and repair diesel powered vehicles. 
• Communicate effectively with customers and shop personnel.
• Apply appropriate Diesel workplace skills. 
• Perform safe working practices in the work place.  
• Apply critical thinking skills for the mechanical field.
