Campbell County Soccer Legend to Take Reigns as First Men’s Soccer Coach at Gillette College

Former Campbell County High School defender and coach Saber Garcia, who has been a fixture in soccer within the county since his playing days in the mid-‘90s, has been named Gillette College’s first-ever men’s soccer coach.

Coach Garcia began playing for the Gillette Edge at 8 years old and continued to play through high school, ultimately being named the U-19 state team MVP. He was a member of the Wyoming Olympic Development soccer team and was a three-year starter for the CCHS Camels.

Coach Garcia has served as a coach at CCHS for 14 years, the last two as Head Coach. He has also coached the Edge since 2008. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and Health from the University of Wyoming.

“Saber Garcia has unparalleled knowledge of how to recruit and coach soccer in the State of Wyoming,” said Jenni Winter, GC Athletic Director. “His passion for the game and dedication to his students consistently shines through. We could not be prouder for him to take over as our first Men’s Soccer Head Coach.”

Coach Garcia’s first task upon beginning his position this coming Monday will be to pull together a team to compete in NJCAA action for the 2017-2018 school year. A “football fundamentalist” at heart, Coach Garcia says he will stress soccer’s physical demands and attacking tactics while fielding a well-balanced approach to the game. “I view the game of soccer as a chess match,” he said. “I believe a team must be well-versed in a variety of soccer tactics in order to neutralize opponents’ strengths and attack their weaknesses.”
