SUMMARY:Shelest Piano Duo
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday\, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. in Kinnison Hall for the Shelest Piano Duo.\nGet Tickets \nPraised for their “stirring performances of rare repertory” (Fanfare)\, the acclaimed team of Anna and Dmitri Shelest traces its roots to Ukraine’s prestigious Kharkiv Special Music School. At their Carnegie Hall debut in February\, 2018\, the duo’s CD release of “Ukrainian Rhapsody” brought renewed international attention to the music of their homeland. Subsequently\, that recording has been featured as the Album of the Week on radio stations throughout the United States\, including WCRB (Boston) and KUSC (Los Angeles). Having been classmates since middle school\, the artists began performing together after their marriage in the United States. Their inventive programs brought them to a broad array of venues from concert stages to state functions\, and\, in the words of then-Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon\, “realized diplomacy through music.” \nAnna and Dmitri Shelest and their two sons make their home in New York City. \nVisit their website.

SUMMARY:North\, South\, East\, West: People\, Places\, and Things | Works by Hannah O'Hare Bennett
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an artist talk and opening reception Monday\, September 14\, 2026 at 4 p.m.\nFree. \nHannah O’Hare Bennett is a Madison-based multidisciplinary artist with nine years of professional practice since completing her MFA in Design Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2017. She came to graduate school after fifteen years in sustainable agriculture and food systems\, including two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ecuador\, a country and community she has continued to return to and work with ever since. That life before art runs through everything she makes. \nShe makes medium-scale multimedia tapestries (described aptly as “extremely low relief sculptural textiles”) involving bead weaving\, yarn\, handmade paper\, and found inclusions. The work is rooted in the disorientation\, translation\, and hard-won connection of cultural integration\, drawn from her experience living in a rural Ecuadorian community where Spanish was new\, the social codes were unfamiliar\, and friendship was built slowly across real difference. The series titled\, People\, Places and Things\, reflects that grounding in language\, story\, and the particulars of human experience. In her own words\, the work is a celebration of incongruity\, imperfect language\, and incredible luck. \nShe is the recipient of a 2025 Women’s Artist Forward Art Prize\, a UW-Madison Division of the Arts Edna Wiechers Arts in Wisconsin Award and a UW-Madison University Fellowship. Her residency record includes Penland School of Craft\, Women’s Studio Workshop\, Tides Institute\, Playa Summer Lake\, and Kimmel Harding Nelson. She has taught at Arrowmont\, Pyramid Atlantic\, the Paper and Book Intensive\, and the Morgan Conservatory. She has held college teaching positions at Mount Mary University\, University of Montana Western\, and UW-Madison. \nwww.hannahoharebennett.com/

SUMMARY:Science Lecture Series: Bureau of Land Management Wild Horse and Burro Program
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, Sept. 16\, 7:00 pm – W153. Free. Attend in person or  via zoom.\n\n\n\nWith Eddie Vandenberg\, Bureau of Land Management Wild Horse and Burro Specialist\, Rawlins Field Office \n\n\n\nAbstract: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) created the Wild Horse and Burro Program to implement the Wild-Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act\, passed by Congress in 1971. Broadly\, the law declares wild horses and burros to be “living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West” and stipulates that the BLM and the U.S. Forest Service have the responsibility to manage and protect herds in their respective jurisdictions within areas where wild horses and burros were found roaming in 1971.  To maintain wild horses and burros in good condition and protect the health of our public lands\, the BLM must manage the population growth of wild horse and burro herds. Without natural population controls\, such as predation\, herds can increase at a rate of up to 20 percent annually\, doubling in size in just 4 to 5 years\, if not appropriately managed. Population control must be implemented to protect scarce and fragile resources in the arid West and ensure healthy animals.  To carry out this mission\, the BLM controls herd growth through the application of fertility measures\, such as birth control\, and through the periodic removals of excess animals and the placement of those animals into private care. \n\n\n\nBiosketch: Ed Vandenburg grew up in Meeker\, Oklahoma. After a four-year enlistment in the U.S. Marines\, he attended college and received a Bachelor of Science in Vocational Agriculture/ Animal Science from the University of Wyoming. Ed spent 10 years as a professional farrier and is currently employed by the Bureau of Land Management as a Wild Horse and Burro Specialist in the Rawlins Field Office in Rawlins\, Wyoming.
