SUMMARY:Science Lecture Series: How the Skeleton of a Dolphin\, named Val\, Came to Wyoming from California
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, Oct. 14\, 7:00 pm – W153. Free. Attend in person or via zoom.\n\n\n\nWith Sheila Flynn\, Retired Dental Hygienist and Volunteer Paleontologist \n\n\n\nAbstract: In 2006 on a Sheridan College field trip to San Clemente Island my husband Michael\, geology/ dinosaur /paleontology instructor at the College\, found the skull of an extant dolphin. With the help of Bill Matteson and Brian Flynn\, who were part of the field study\, I found the rest of the remaining skeleton. I have always liked dolphins\, so I decided to take it back to Sheridan College and try to rearticulate the skeleton. It took three years to research and rearticulate the skeleton. The dolphin specimen was collected under a Marine Mammal collection permit. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles held a permit and allowed Sheridan College Museum of Discovery to cover our collection of the skeleton. In February 2009 Val was displayed at the Sheridan College Museum of Discovery with a beautiful mural painted by a local artist Ellen Dudley. \nWhen the Museum of Discovery was remodeled\, the theme was changed to concentrate on Dinosaurs. In March of 2024\, Val was moved to The Geology Museum at the University of Wyoming. The Museum had always wanted to get a dolphin skeleton to be able to compare the co-evolution of Paleo marine reptiles and marine mammals. \nBiosketch:Sheila S. Flynn moved to Sheridan with her husband\, Michael\, who taught at Sheridan College for 27 years. I practiced as a Dental Hygienist for 24 years and am now retired. I accompanied my husband on paleontology field studies in 2004 to 2005 to San Clemente Island where I discovered a Miocene (10-12 million years old) fossil Odontoceti (toothed whale). I researched the fossil and found evidence of periodontal disease on the fossil’s tooth. In 2013\, I published with two co-authors an article that documented the dental calculus found on the tooth root was evidence of periodontal disease. “Indications of periodontal disease in a fossil Odontoceti (Mammalia: Cetacea) from the late Miocene Monterey Formation at San Clemente Island\, Southern California.” Authors: Flynn\, Sheila S.\, Moses\, Randolph J. and Connoly\, Jon H.

SUMMARY:Presentation at SCJC: Mongolia: Half a World Away\, or Right Next Door?
DESCRIPTION:Join us Tuesday\, Nov. 10\, at 6 p.m. in SCJC 103 for a free presentation by Sheridan College Director of Agriculture Mae Smith on her experiences in Mongolia. This will also be live streamed via zoom at www.sheridan.edu/lectures.\nCookies and refreshments will be provided. \nOutline:\nAlthough Mongolia is around the world\, Wyomingites will probably feel the same deep connection to the landscapes\, culture and issues faced by the Mongolian people as I did. Join me as a I take you on a photographic journey of Mongolia’s Hustai National Park and surrounding areas. We will explore Przewalski’s wild horse\, wildlife\, livestock grazing\, culture\, food\, transportation and other issues facing Mongolia. You may be surprised\, as I was\, about how many of these issues are also experienced by Wyoming livestock producers. However\, there are some things that can only be experienced in Mongolia. \nBiography:\nMae grew up in western Wyoming where she developed a love for the outdoors. From her experience cattle ranching\, working at a native plant nursery and being raised by two natural resource professionals\, she knew that rangeland management was her future path. She spends as much time outside as she can exploring locally\, across the US and\, whenever possible\, internationally. She joined Sheridan College in 2017 as Director of Agriculture and Rangeland Management Instructor where she gets to help students develop their passion for rangelands. \n

SUMMARY:Skyline Singers present "The Pirates of Penzance"
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, Nov. 7 in Kinnison Hall at 7 p.m.\nGet Tickets \nOne of the most popular works by the British team of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan\, “The Pirates of Penzance” had its first performance in New York City in 1879. The operetta centers on young Frederic\, who\, as a boy\, was mistakenly apprenticed to a band of pirates. Frederic does not like the life of piracy\, but he plans to serve dutifully until his 21st birthday. Plot twists\, romance\, and conflicts between pirates and police officers propel the plot with comedy and irony. \nThe principal roles will be sung by members of Skyline Singers. Sheridan local Ryan Landis plays Frederic\, Rosalyn Steiner plays Mabel\, and Jan Michael Kliewer plays Major-General Stanley. The performance will also feature John Zirkle as the Pirate King\, Daren Small as Edward\, the Sergeant of Police\, Jeffrey Cuevas as Samuel\, Erin Henke as Edith\, Leah Hoblit as Kate\, and Anne Kanie as Ruth. The Sheridan College Chamber Choir and Collegiate Chorale will serve as the chorus for this production. \nSkyline Singers is the professional choir in residence at the Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College in Sheridan\, Wyoming. Our specialty is a cappella music\, ranging from plainsong to part-songs\, madrigals to motets\, and from vocal jazz to contemporary pop. \nwww.skylinesingers.org

SUMMARY:Adel Sheep Shearing\, Sieben Live Stock Company by J.M. Cooper
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an artist talk and opening reception Thursday\, November 5th\, 2026 at 4 p.m. Sponsored by Missoula Art Museum & MAGDA.\nFree. \nThis series of photographs focuses on the annual sheep shearing at the Sieben Live Stock Company in Adel near Cascade\, Montana. Cooper photographed the event over three separate years in 1999\, 2000\, and 2007. The ranch was founded in 1868 by Henry Sieben\, who is the subject of a new book published in tandem with the exhibition by Farcountry Press and the Foundation for Montana History. \nThe resulting 22 images presented here are each framed 17 x 20 inches. All photographs were taken on 35 mm TMAX 400 Kodak film\, which was hand processed\, then scanned as negatives\, edited in Photoshop\, and printed on archival Hahnemuhle paper. \nCooper began photographing in the 1970s\, and was a student of Lee Nye\, the infamous black & white photographer from Missoula\, MT. Cooper says\, “When Lee walked into the classroom wearing aviator sunglasses\, I knew I was going to be a photographer.” \nCooper recently retired as archival photographer for the Montana Historical Society. He has documented spring shearing and branding\, and Montana architecture including the Archie Bray Foundation\, Deer Lodge Prison\, and Helena’s Last Chance Gulch. His photos are published in Dark Spaces: Montana’s Historic Penitentiary at Deer Lodge in collaboration with Ellen Baulmer. \nThe Foundation for Montana History provided support to the artist in printing\, matting\, and framing the photographs for exhibition.

DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday\, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. in Kinnison Hall.\nGet Tickets.\nCaroline Davis’ solo performances are chosen spontaneously\, given the atmosphere of the room and the people present. She explores sonic textures offered by interactive technologies\, sharing sounds from the saxophone that she considers to be distinctive and quirky. She makes use of Pure Data patches developed by the open source community surrounding the Organelle (the technobear\, shreeswifty\, critterandguitari\, tony j morton\, nobuyasu sakonda\, soxsa\, varicela\, nicky-system\, samesimilar\, and chrisk). The music during this performance will pull from Caroline’s recent solo album\, Fallows\, created during a time of rest on land in Ucross\, Wyoming. Bell hooks was a constant source of inspiration during this time\, through the following ideas: love as a practice of freedom\, radical openness\, maintenance of commitment\, using community as a means of escape\, belief in one’s capacity to transform\, what it means to listen\, and eliminating elimination. \nBio:\nCaroline Davis is a Brooklyn-based saxophonist\, composer\, and activist\, whose work is driven by a desire for connection and a belief in music’s capacity to expand listeners’ ears\, minds\, and hearts. A 2025 Guggenheim Fellow in Composition\, she is the recipient of the DownBeat Critics Poll Alto Saxophone Rising Star Award\, as well as fellowships from NYFA\, the Jerome Foundation\, Chamber Music America\, and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Her residencies include MacDowell\, The Jazz Gallery\, Civitella\, and the Rockefeller Estate\, and she has served as a mentor for New Music USA’s Next Jazz Legacy program. \nDavis’s work spans a wide range of creative contexts\, rooted in improvisation and social inquiry. She has released eight albums as a leader and collaborated with artists such as Allison Miller\, Lee Konitz\, John Zorn\, Angelica Sanchez\, The Femme Jam\, Miles Okazaki\, Nicole Mitchell\, Rajna Swaminathan\, and Matt Mitchell. Her most recent release\, Portals\, explores themes of grief and memory\, and she is also a contributor to Terri Lyne Carrington’s New Standards\, a landmark collection of jazz compositions by female-identifying composers. \nIn addition to her work as a performer and composer\, Davis is a dedicated educator\, teaching courses on gender in jazz at The New School and maintaining a private studio at the Manhattan School of Music. Her artistic practice is deeply intertwined with advocacy\, including work for gender equity through This Is A Movement\, and for current and formerly incarcerated individuals through initiatives such as Justice for Keith LaMar\, Freer Records\, Keys Beats Bars\, and Creative Beyond Incarceration.
