SUMMARY:Presentation by author Sarah E. Berns
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists on Wednesday\, March 25th at the Kooi Library at Sheridan College at 3 p.m.\nThe event will begin with a short presentation about the IYRP by the director of our Agriculture Department Mae Smith\, followed by a presentation by author\, and resident at Ucross Sarah E. Berns. \nSarah Berns has won an arm-wrestling match in the oldest saloon in Washington state; rounded up bison on horseback through the Palouse prairie; put her arm into a cow’s rear to check on its unborn calf; and bucked hay bales under a once-in-a-millennium heat dome. Berns has been a doula for 15 years\, helping pregnant people before\, during and after giving birth. She once delivered a baby in a pickup truck\, on the side of a country road\, on a subzero winter night — and didn’t even write a country song about it. Berns has published essays and opinion pieces in Outside Magazine and at Shondaland. Her personal essay\, Finding Home in the West – by Smokejumping\, was annotated on the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard. Longreads included her essay\, Love and the Burning West\, on its Weekly Top 5 Longreads of the Week\, and included the piece in its list of favorite essays about wildfire. She has been a finalist for the Sundance Writers Lab and also for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Nicholl Fellowship in screenwriting. Berns’s unique perspective on firefighting has made her a sought-after voice for those writing about fire. She has been quoted in The Atlantic and in the Huffington Post. She has served as the wildfire consultant for the award-winning animated children’s series\, The Stinky & Dirty Show\, as well as the consultant for the middle-grade book\, Smokejumpers. The CBS program 60 Minutes+ interviewed her for an episode about smokejumping. \nFor more information contact:\nJennifer Anderson\njanderson@sheridan.edu\n307.675.0221 \nIn Partnership with Ucross.

SUMMARY:Amanda Allyn\, Faculty Recital\, "It Ain't That Deep"
DESCRIPTION:Join us Tuesday\, March 24 at 7 pm for a free recital by adjunct faculty Amanda Allyn in Kinnison Hall.\n“It Ain’t That Deep” reflects the rich\, living tapestry of American commercial music genres born from the creative resilience\, expression\, and brilliance of Black American musical traditions and continually shaped by artists across cultures and generations. From soul and R&B to pop and singer-songwriter styles\, these songs honor a lineage that bridges storytelling\, groove\, and vocal authenticity. \nWithin the academic study of voice\, we explore style\, vocal function\, and the cultural forces that shape contemporary commercial sound. But “It Ain’t That Deep” is a reminder to not get lost in the mechanics or rigor of scholarship; at its heart\, this music is about expression\, freedom\, moving\, and connection. This program is a celebration of versatility\, vulnerability\, and the ongoing dialogue between scholarship and commercial music today. \nBand:\nGuitar – Jake Hirschman\nBass – Shawn Day\nKeys – Isaac Campbell\nDrums – Titus Brown\nAdditional Vocals – Danielle Law\, Emmie Rambur\, Neva Rose Patterson\, Various Students of Sheridan College and Aspen Grove Music Studio \nAmanda Allyn is a contemporary vocalist whose sound moves authentically across the R&B\, country\, pop\, and soul landscapes. Shaped by Shenandoah Conservatory graduate studies in commercial and contemporary voice pedagogy\, Amanda leans into the grain of the human voice: the crack\, the cry\, the pulse beneath the pitch. As both performer and pedagogue\, she brings a dual lens to the stage. Amanda understands the mechanics of the instrument\, but more importantly\, she honors its humanity. \nIn addition to teaching piano and voice at Sheridan College\, Amanda is the founder of Aspen Grove Music Studio in Sheridan\, Wyoming\, where she cultivates a collaborative and diverse student-centered community. She also directs The Hubcaps\, a creative aging choir celebrating lifelong musicianship\, and is actively involved in directing and coaching drama productions at Big Horn High School throughout the year.
