Course Description: Participants will learn basic methods and techniques of watercolor painting, outdoors and indoors. We will hold a discussion of materials, brushes, paper, paint, some examples.  We’ll also discuss how (and why) to keep a journal / sketchbook.  Class will begin with a few demonstrations, then we’ll each paint what we see, the way we see it.

Course Schedule:

  • Evening of August 15th
  • 4:00 – Leave Sheridan College Golden Dome parking lot
  • 5:00 – Arrive at Spear-O, Settle in, Orientation
  • 6:00 -Dinner
  • 7:00 – Discussion of “the basics” – materials & methods
  • 7:30 – Quick demonstration of some techniques & some suggested reading
  • August 16th
  • 6:30 – Coffee –  Morning light demonstration / sketch
  • 7:30 -Breakfast
  • 8:30 – Review techniques, supplies, details
  • 9:00 – everybody paints
  • 12:00 – Lunch
  • 1:00 – Review morning’s work & practice additional techniques
  • 2:00 – More painting & Review/ Discussion
  • 4:00 – Depart Spear-O-Wigwam

Participant Equip List:

  • 1.  Basic set of Watercolor Paints.  I generally just use quinacrodone rose, cadmium yellow light, and pthalo blue.   Bring what you have, if you already paint.
  • 2.  Watercolor brushes; #8 round, 1/2” flat, 1 to 2 inch flat wash, small rigger, or your regular brushes, if you already paint.  A cheap set of watercolor brushes is fine.
  • 3.  Paper; 140# cold press sheets or block is fine 11 x 14 inch is big enough.  8×10 watercolor notebook or journal is also fine, these are often 80#, but heavier is better.  If you know what you like, bring that.
  • 4.  Water container(s), paper towels.  A sponge and cloth towel are handy.
  • 5.   Portable easel with a firm board, or a lap board, something to hold your work
  • 6.   Maybe a small folding table and tiny camp stool.
  • 7.  Tape, pencils, eraser, etc. for sketching
  • 8.  Camera – optional, but very handy.
  • 9.  Appropriate sun, weather, and bug protection.

What to expect when staying @ Spear-O-Wigwam:

Travel

– All participants will be expected to meet at the Sheridan College Golden Dome 10 minutes prior to departure time. Students are allowed to drive their own vehicle, or transportation will be provided to Spear-O-Wigwam. Please indicate at time of registration as to how you intend on traveling.

Meals

– All meals, snacks and drinks will be provided while staying at Spear-O-Wigwam. Please let us know if you have any allergies or specific requirements when you register for a course.

Lodging

– Excluding Front Country Backpacking and Wilderness Survival, all Summer 2011 class participants will be housed in Spear-O-Wigwam cabins.

Equipment

– Upon registration, each student will be given an equipment list provided by the course instructor.

Fishing

– Course participants are welcome to fish during their free time at Spear-O-Wigwam; however, you must provide your own fishing equipment and have a current Wyoming fishing license. (There will be no place to purchase one once you are at Spear-O)
