Course Description:
Get away from it all and join us for an introduction to the outdoor experience.  Learn the basic dos, don’ts and must haves for a day spent in the mountains.  This course is intended for the amateur outdoor enthusiast.  We will be spending the night at Spear-O-Wigwams and then hiking 5-7 miles in the Big Horn National Forest – learning all the “tricks of the trade” along the way.  We’ll depart from Sheridan College Golden Dome parking lot at 4pm and return at 5pm the following day.

Course Schedule:

  • 4 PM Meet @ SC & leave for Spear-O-Wigwam
  • 5 PM arrive & settle in to cabins
  • 5:30 dinner
  • 6:45- 8:15 Discussion of equipment list and layout of next day
  • 7am breakfast & pack lunch
  • 8 am hit the trail
  • 4-4:30 leave Spear-O-Wigwam
  • 5:30 back @ Sheridan College

Participant Equip List:

  • Day pack
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat
  • Sun screen
  • Jacket (light weight, packable & water proof preferably)
  • Water bottle
  • Hiking boots or shoes
  • Wool or wool/synthetic blend socks
  • Synthetic hiking pants, capris or shorts
  • Synthetic s/s shirt and l/s over shirt
  • Insect repellent
  • Journal
  • Optional – Hiking pole(s), Knife / Multi-tool, Bandana, Extra pair socks

What to expect when staying @ Spear-O-Wigwam:

Travel

– All participants will be expected to meet at the Sheridan College Golden Dome 10 minutes prior to departure time. Students are allowed to drive their own vehicle, or transportation will be provided to Spear-O-Wigwam. Please indicate at time of registration as to how you intend on traveling.

Meals

– All meals, snacks and drinks will be provided while staying at Spear-O-Wigwam. Please let us know if you have any allergies or specific requirements when you register for a course.

Lodging

– Excluding Front Country Backpacking and Wilderness Survival, all Summer 2011 class participants will be housed in Spear-O-Wigwam cabins.

Equipment

– Upon registration, each student will be given an equipment list provided by the course instructor.

Fishing

– Course participants are welcome to fish during their free time at Spear-O-Wigwam; however, you must provide your own fishing equipment and have a current Wyoming fishing license. (There will be no place to purchase one once you are at Spear-O)
