Chuck Denny—“Reading” The Bozeman Trail: Exploration Narrative as Cultural Mythology

Whenever we compare European exploration narratives of certain areas with Native American stories about the same spaces, we tend to focus on the cultural, psychological, and literary differences that separate the two, thus broadening the intellectual divide between Native and Euro America. This lecture will compare the two forms with a different set of assumptions than those previously described. We will explore the similarities between the stories, and perhaps bring the Native and European voices into better harmony. Participants may seek to develop a more harmonious reading of one set of narratives, those stories (both European and Native) related to the lands and locations we now call “The Bozeman Trail”.

Chuck Denny, English Instructor at Gillette College, has a long-term interest in literature of the west.
