NWCCD SPEAR-O-WIGWAM
The Northern Wyoming Community College District announced in late April a commitment to outdoor learning as a method to enhance existing academic programming as well as provide new opportunities for students and the community. In partnership with the US Forest Service, the college will be issued an educational special use permit, granting access to 67,850 acres of land in the Bighorn Mountains for educational purposes. The college has also purchased the historic Spear-O-Wigwam ranch and will use it as a ‘home’ facility to support this vision.
“Our strategic vision includes ‘contributing to the cultural life of our region by leveraging the beauty, culture and history of our area’ and we are proud to provide this opportunity for our students today as well as 50 years from now,” said NWCCD President Dr. Paul Young. “We are blessed to live in an area with bountiful resources. As the local College, it is our responsibility to capitalize on the opportunities that exist. The concept of outdoor learning will become a signature of NWCCD.”
The College has a number of offerings already planned for this summer including a writer’s camp, a lecture series, an outdoor survival school and numerous others in the works.
