Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs

GEAR UP Wyoming is a statewide program that serves 2,000 7th-12th grade income-eligible students each year.  Wyoming’s seven community colleges provide services to these students and encourage them not only to complete high school, but to enter and succeed at a post-secondary institution.  The GEAR UP Wyoming program also supports students through their first year of college.  The following are some of the services GEAR UP provides to students and their families:

  • Tutoring and mentoring to enhance academic success and college readiness
  • Assistance with financial aid, scholarship and college applications
  • College and career exploration opportunities
  • Summer academies and college visits
  • ACT Preparation

One of the most successful aspects of NWCCD’s GEAR UP program is the relationship-building with parents and students.  This, combined with a team of tutors, mentors, and school liaisons, enables NWCCD to positively impact lives with each contact.

NWCCD offers tutoring/mentoring/academic coaching and quarterly lunch workshops which cover college exploration and planning activities.  All of the opportunities GEAR UP NWCCD provides are aimed at promoting academic achievement and giving the students the resources and skills they need to accomplish their educational dreams.  At each of the schools, our staff strives to stay connected with the students enrolled in GEAR UP to keep students on track with their academic goals and help them achieve success in higher education.

Parent and family events are provided throughout the year.  These events are geared toward helping parents and guardians maneuver the college admission processes from start to finish, including helping their students apply for college admission, scholarships, and Federal Student Aid.  NWCCD also helps lead parents through what the first year of their student’s college life will be like.  GEAR UP stresses to parents how much it means to students when their parents become involved in this process.
