Compass: Placement testing for admissions

All first-time college students are required to show their math and English abilities by completing the English (writing and reading) and math placement tests before registering. If you are a graduating high school senior or a high school student applying for dual/concurrent enrollment, you may use your ACT scores for placement until one year from your high school graduation date.

If you are a transfer student you must show a college level math and or English class on an official college transcript.

Each placement test is $5. ($10 for both Math and English). Testers must present a picture ID. Appointments at least one day in advance are required. The placement tests are not timed, but average 1 1/2 hours each (3 hours for both Math and English). The results are immediate and good for one year. Placements tests can be repeated up to three times per registration period.

You may review the Sheridan College placement scores here.

TEAS: Entrance exam for the Nursing Program

The Test of Essential Academic Skills is required as an entrance exam for the Nursing Program. This is a four part assessment developed by Assessment Technologies Institute consisting of subtests in Reading, Mathematics, Science, and English with 170 total questions. The TEAS is a timed test with a total testing time for all four test areas of approximately four hours.

The score reporting system for the TEAS includes a composite score for each of the four general areas. Sixteen sub-scores are generated to assess specific content mastery. Scoring is automatic; and scores are received within 5 minutes of completing the exam.

The TEAS test may be taken only once per semester and students can take the test up to a maximum of three times before being required to wait a five year period to retest.

  • The TEAS is computer based and is conducted in the Testing Center. A written version is available for special accommodations.
  • The test fee is $50.00.
  • Students must present photo ID the day of the test.

CLEP: Earn college level credits by examination

CLEP examinations cover material taught in courses that most students take as requirements in the first two years of college. A college usually grants the same amount of credit to students earning satisfactory scores on the CLEP examination as it grants to students successfully completing the course.

Each exam is 90 minutes long, and is made up primarily of multiple-choice. Some exams include short answer. College Composition requires an essay in addition to the multiple-choice questions. CLEP exams cost $100-110 ($80-90 payable to CLEP and $20 payable to Sheridan College for test administration).

  • CLEP tests are computer based and conducted in our Testing Center.
  • CLEP tests DO NOT substitute for credit hours required for Financial Aid or Scholarship requirements.
  • CLEP credits appear on your transcript only.

What should I bring on exam day?
