Sheridan College to host 12th annual ‘Border Wars’ March 4
More than 100 high school students from Wyoming, Montana and South Dakota are expected to compete in the 12th annual ‘Border Wars’ event on Tuesday, March 2, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Whitney Presentation Hall and the Agriculture and Natural Science Center at Sheridan College. Students will compete in one of two categories: Agricultural Sales or Environmental and Natural Resources.
Prizes will be awarded to the top team from each state in each contest. Scholarships and prizes will also be awarded to the top individuals in each contest.
High schools are allowed to enter as many teams as they want and partial teams will also be allowed to participate.
Chuck Holloway, SC agriculture business and horticulture instructor, will direct the Ag Sales event. Students will have to sell an agricultural product they have brought with them to an official judge. Students will be judged on advertising campaigns, sales presentation, customer service and how well they solve team problems. Sheridan College faculty will judge the competition with assistance from students currently majoring in agriculture at Sheridan College.
Keith Klement, SC natural resources and ranch land management instructor, will head up the Environmental and Natural Resources competition in which students will be tested on their ability to identify wildlife, plants and use field sampling equipment (soil and water sampling, etc.), while also solving natural resource and environmental concerns in written and oral presentation format, as individuals and in team setting practicums.
These events are similar to what the students will compete in during their respective state FFA competitions later this spring. This local competition of Border Wars is a great way for these students to prepare.
