NWCCD offers learn outdoor classes for summer/fall

A writer’s retreat, a wilderness survival course, landscape painting, and a beginning rock climbing class.  These are a few of the items on the newest menu of ‘Learn Outdoor’ classes available for the summer and fall from the Northern Wyoming Community College District.

Recently, the District purchased Spear-O-Wigwam, a former dude-ranch nestled in the beautiful Bighorn Mountains. The acquisition of Spear-O-Wigwam allows NWCCD to emphasize the human-environment connection; by incorporating the natural world into instructional practices, a foundation can be built for hands-on learning experiences. “We are excited about the opportunity for citizens of Northern Wyoming to enjoy the natural beauty of the Bighorn Mountains,” said Trudy Munsick, Dean of Health Sciences. “This menu of courses represents the beginning of our ‘Learn Outdoors’ vision. We will continue to enhance the list of offerings, and will also be launching a late fall/winter menu at the end of the summer.”

Most courses on the current menu include an overnight stay at Spear-O-Wigwam, and all classes include meals and travel. Sheridan College Professor Jane Wohl will host a weekend writing workshop, and three of Sheridan’s premier artists, Joel Ostlind, Mara Schasteen and Randy Stout, have been recruited to instruct landscape painting workshops at Spear-O.  Additionally, local American Mountain Guide Association Instructor, Tom Johanesmeyer will teach two rock climbing courses; and survival guru Mark Andersen will lead a 4 day wilderness survival course in the Cloud Peak Wilderness.
