Spear-O-Wigwam to offer free lecture series starting Sunday

The first installment of the 2014 Mountain Lecture Series at Spear-O-Wigwam will take place Sunday, June 22, with Randy Stout’s presentation of “The Solitude Trail Experience.”

Stout’s presentation will run from 1-3 p.m. and is free. The public is encouraged to attend, bring a picnic lunch, meet the Spear-O-Wigwam staff, tour the facilities and learn more about the Northern Wyoming Community College District’s unique mountain campus. The lecture will include refreshments and cookies.

Spear-O-Wigwam is located in the Bighorn Mountains, up Red Grade Road, about an hour drive from Sheridan.

Stout, a renowned Wyoming artist, known for his watercolor paintings, has several years of experience hiking the Solitude Trail and has often painted the scenery.

This is the fourth year of the popular Mountain Lecture Series.

“Attending the lectures is one of the best ways for the public to take advantage of the Spear-O-Wigwam mountain campus,” said Julie Davidson, Director of Recreation and Outdoor Education for the NWCCD. “We are excited about this year’s new lineup of presentations.”

The Mountain Lecture Series includes “Edible Plants of the Bighorn Mountains,” on Saturday, July 19; “The Importance of Knowing Ernest: Lessons learned while I was Hemingway’s secretary 1959-60,” on Sunday, Aug. 17; and “Celebrating 50 years of Wilderness,” on Sunday, Sept. 14.
