Gillette College students head for National SkillsUSA competition

Two Gillette College students who excelled in the statewide SkillsUSA Conference and Skills Championships, held in Casper in April, will compete on the national stage this month.

Karson Mennie, winner of the Diesel Equipment Technology category, and Cody Sanburn, who finished first in the Job Skill Demonstration A category, will represent Gillette College at the 50th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City, June 23-27.

Mennie is from Colstrip, Mont., and Sanburn is from Sheridan. They will be accompanied by Gillette College instructors Travis Grubb and Brent Heusinkveld.

“Competing in the National Leadership and Skills Conference will enrich our students’ learning experience,” said Jed Jensen, Gillette College Dean of Career and Technical Education. “Our students are excited to compete and learn about industrial innovation on a national level.”

At the state competition, Gillette College students Josh Prasek and Sanburn took second and third in the Diesel Equipment Technology category. In the Related Technical Math category, Austin Zimmerman took second and Jake Coleman finished third. Justin Helvey earned third in the Job Interview category, while Glen Dapra took third in the Prepared Speech category.
