Gillette College PTK honor society chapter earns national recognition

Gillette College’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter Alpha Nu Psi recently earned five-star distinction, the highest ranking a chapter can earn. Of the nearly 1,300 worldwide PTK chapters, 360 earned the five-star honor this year.

The college’s chapter has earned the five-star ranking for 18 years by participating in activities that benefit both the school and greater community.

Each year, Alpha Nu Psi sponsors the “Commit to Completion” banner at Gillette College, encouraging classmates to sign their names on the banner and pledge to finish their academic goals. Gillette College PTK students also volunteer as peer tutors throughout the semester.

“Our Gillette College PTK students are proactive in engaging their fellow students on campus, while empowering and encouraging them to achieve success,” said Dr. Mark Englert, CEO and VP of Gillette College.

PTK is one of the world’s oldest, largest and most prestigious honor societies for two-year college students. There are chapters across all 50 states, U.S. territories and 10 countries.

Alpha Nu Psi also earned regional recognition, earning third place in the 2014 Distinguished College Project category of the PTK Nebraska/Wyoming region. The chapter’s commitment to its Peer Tutor Program, GC-Force, merited the recognition.

Outstanding regional awards were presented at the international convention in Orlando, Florida, in April.

“I’ve realized that both positive and negative energies are contagious,” said Alpha Nu Psi president Suly Aguilar. “I make the effort to spread positive energy.”

Student member Danielle Ryan was named the 2014 Distinguished Chapter Member. Jess Bank earned the title of 2014 Paragon Award for New Advisors (for advisors with five years or less of experience), and Beth Walker was selected as the 2014 Distinguished Advisor (for advisors with more than five years of experience).
