Saturday University comes to Gillette
Saturday University Tackles: The future of U.S. – China relations, the U.S. banking system and global financial instability, the rise and fall of Wyoming’s open-range cattle companies
GILLETTE, Wyo. —Go back to college for a day – minus the tests, stress and homework – with three professors from the University of Wyoming and Gillette College, who will enlighten and entertain with lectures during Saturday University: The Free One-Day College Education on Saturday, November 10.
Attend one, two or all three Saturday University lectures from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., on November 10, in the Gillette Main Building Presentation Hall. The day wraps up at 12:30 p.m. with a free lunch and conversation as the professors explore links among their topics.

9:00-10:00 a.m. The Rise and Fall of Wyoming’s Open-Range Cattle Companies

In the beginning, large open-range cattle companies were organized and financed regionally and even locally. As worldwide interest spread about the potential for huge profits in open-range ranching in Wyoming, absentee investors became the primary shareholders. New corporate cattle companies with operations in Wyoming organized in Edinburgh, London and elsewhere. All went well until a series of difficulties brought collapse to the cattle industry in Wyoming.
10:15-11:15 a.m. The U.S. Banking System and Global Financial Instability
Ann Spehar, Mathematics and Economics, Gillette College
It is a daunting task to identify the underlying cause of the 2007 financial crisis. Economists and politicians alike have yet to agree on what were the main triggers. The presentation will focus on the role of U.S. banking institutions in the current financial crisis and the new banking model that has evolved and prospered over the last several decades into a new financial order—generating moral hazards and an unstable, volatile global financial order.
11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The Future of U.S.-China Relations
Jean Garrison, Global and Area Studies, University of Wyoming
With elections in the United States and a looming leadership transition in China, we are at a crucial period in the U.S.-China relationship. As the two leading economies in the world, what happens between the U.S. and China—whether towards greater cooperation or completion—can have ripple effects around the world. The presentation will explore the recent history of the relationship and specifically look beyond the rhetoric to better evaluate this complex and dynamic relationship.

Now in its second year, Saturday University is a collaborative program connecting popular UW professors with Wyoming residents who have a desire to learn. Saturday University is sponsored by the University of Wyoming, University of Wyoming Foundation, Wyoming Humanities Council, and area businesses. The program is presented locally by Gillette College.
