Additional Information:

The Sheridan College Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Michael P. Flynn, will perform their final of four concerts this year on Sunday, May 4, at 7 p.m. at the Sheridan High School Auditorium. Dr. Flynn will be discussing the works to be performed at 6 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

This concert is centered on a piece for wind ensemble by W. Francis McBeth entitled, “Of Sailors and Whales.” Narrated by Brett Burtis, this work puts to music the story of the great white whale in Melville’s “Moby Dick.” This work features beautiful melodic lines, furious woodwind performance, and thunderous percussion. Listening to this spectacular work, one cannot help but conjure images of the sea and the ferocious great white whale! The wind ensemble will also be performing a portion of Grainer’s “Lincolnshire Posy,” a time tested standard of wind ensemble repertoire.

Preceding the monumental finale is the SC Jazz Ensemble, recognized across the state as one of the premier collegiate jazz ensembles in the region. The performance will include incredibly challenging works that expand the stylistic standard of our ensemble. Works to be performed include “Idioteque,” from the band Radiohead, “Cruisin’ for a Bluesin’” from the Maynard Ferguson Jazz Orchestra, and “Michelangelo,” a work based on melodies of Astor Piazzola.
