Chemistry
You can’t escape chemistry. It’s all around you. The products of chemistry are used in every day life, from the food you eat, to the beverages you drink, to the laundry detergent and dish soap you use to clean household items. Without the efforts of chemists, the world would be a very different place.
The Chemistry program at NWCCD: Sheridan College and Gillette College provides a student-centered approach to Introductory, General, and Organic Chemistry. Students are encouraged to ask questions and to actively participate during lectures, while laboratory sessions consist of open- and guided-inquiry investigations designed to fully engage students in pursuing fundamental ideas in Chemistry.
The Chemistry laboratory facilities at NWCCD are well equipped. Students regularly use Vernier data-collection probes and software in conducting investigations. The use of word-processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software along with the web in conducting and reporting research is supported and encouraged. The General and Organic courses involve the use of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS).
Our courses, including the full-year organic sequence, are designed to meet a range of student needs from providing a thought-provoking refresher in basic chemistry to advanced instruction to prepare students for preprofessional programs including pharmacy, optometry, and medicine.
