Aquaculture

Thinking of diving into a career as an Aquaculture Technician?

Aquaculture Technicians are responsible for cultivating plants and animals that live in water and using them to replenish natural populations. This means that the thousands of Aquaculture Techs who work in the growing industry work to replenish the resources people take from fresh and salt water bodies for food and other reasons. Some Aquaculture Techs even provide public aquariums, pet shops and zoos with aquatic animals.

What’s most important, however, about the job of an Aquaculture Tech is the fact that their efforts address the depletion of natural fi sh and other aquatic animals, which has resulted in a dramatic increase in potential positions. Close to one-third of aquatic products consumed in the United States are produced on aquatic farms. That means that halibut, lobster, cod, clams, oysters, trout, walleye, or catfi sh you often see displayed at your local grocery store were likely born and raised on a “fi sh farm” - the same one that employs Aquaculture Techs.

Aquaculture Techs also assist in feeding and monitoring the stock and its environment. This requires an extensive knowledge of the quality of water (salt content, pH level, temperature, and chemical content). Aquaculture Techs also check the stock for disease and administer treatments when necessary.
