Sheridan College Symphony Orchestra “Heritage of Harmony”
Performance featuring Dvorak and Beethoven on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at 7pm in Kinnison Hall at the Whitney Center for the Arts.
With Beethoven’s “King Stephen Overture,” as well as Antonín Dvořák’s “Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95,” also known as the “New World Symphony” on the program, this will surely be a memorable performance.
The Sheridan College Symphony Orchestra, directed by Dr. Mark Elliot Bergman, is comprised of 41 musicians, including college students and instructors, as well as community members.
“Commissioned as part of a larger work commemorating the Hungarian monarch, Stephen I, the overture bursts forth with regal fanfare and majestic themes, reflecting the noble stature of its subject,” Bergman said about Beethoven’s piece, which will start the program. “With its stirring melodies, dynamic contrasts, and relentless energy, the ‘King Stephen Overture’ expresses heroism and triumph in the face of adversity.”
He noted that Dvořák wrote his symphony during his time in the United States and “infused this symphony with melodies reminiscent of both his homeland and the landscapes of the New World… Its enduring popularity lies not only in its exquisite melodies and rich orchestration, but also in its ability to evoke a sense of nostalgia, longing, and hope, making it a timeless treasure of the orchestral repertoire.”
