Circulation
Library cards are issued to all users. A $1.00 replacement
fee will be assessed if the card is lost. Library cards
must be presented in order for any material to be
borrowed. This card is recognized as a statewide card at
WYLD libraries. Each library will set their own loan
period restrictions. Faculty and staff may check out
materials for a semester's time, subject to recall. If
the needed material has already been checked out, patrons
may ask that a "hold" be placed on it upon its
return. The Library staff will notify the requestor as
soon as the material becomes available.
Students and members of the community may check out books for four (4) weeks and periodicals for one (1) week. The circulation periods for other materials vary.
Collection Development Policy
The Library Collection
Development Policy describes the subjects and formats
collected by the Griffith Memorial Library, Sheridan
College, Northern Wyoming Community College District.
Information about donations to the Library and IRS
regulations related to donations (Appendix B) is included
along with an Intellectual Freedom Principles in Academic
Libraries statement (Appendix A) and a form
patrons might use to have the library re-examine a
resource the patron finds objectionable(Appendix C).
The Collections
The library collections include books, print and online
periodicals, as well as audiovisual titles. All of the
online content is available to students and employees on and off-campus. In addition
to its regular collections, the Griffith Memorial Library
is a selective depository for federal government
publications and maps and focuses that collection on
locally important agricultural, geologic and demographic
information. Archival and historical materials related to
area history and Sheridan College are housed in the Gordon Ward Special Collections Room
and are available by appointment.
The Future of the Library Collections
The library, as an integral part of the instructional
process, must pose itself to provide academic resources
wherever and whenever students learn. With the advent of
online instruction at Northern Wyoming Community College,
the library works to extend its collections beyond the
physical limits of our building and beyond the times when
the library is staffed.
Even as we extend our resources for access to students and faculty wherever they teach and learn, we must still meet the needs of students unfamiliar with basic computer operations and faculty who depend on resources not available in electronic formats. Group and individual library-provided instruction is integral to the success of having library patrons use new formats. Additional constraints are imposed by copyright restrictions which limit our ability to share audiovisual materials electronically in streaming video or budget constraints which make such provisions impossible without jeopardizing a balance in the resources and services we provide. The library collections of the future will include a mix of electronic resources, audiovisual and print materials available from remote sites and by actual visits to the library. Students and faculty using the collections will need to have a mix of skills including familiarity with Windows operations, Internet browsers and page viewers such as Adobe Acrobat as well as access inside and outside of the library to current computers and higher speed Internet access. Not all students and employees will have to use the library onsite, but not all resources can and should be made available electronically. Library users at Sheridan College can continue to expect to find print and electronic and audiovisual resources available in house and electronically with services provided onsite, by telephone, by postal delivery and by e-mail.

Government Publications
The Griffith Memorial Library has been a selective
depository for federal government publications since 1963.
Particular strengths of the collection are in areas which
match the College curriculum, i.e., NASA, Department of
the Interior (geology, geography, minerals), and
agriculture. Federal publications not available in our
collection are often available at the Wyoming State
Library or University of Wyoming
Libraries and can be obtained through interlibrary
loan. The Library also collects Wyoming Session Laws and
Statutes and some Wyoming state documents.

Library Use Instruction
The Library staff will provide, on short notice, a brief
walk-through of the Library; this may be useful to classes
which only need to know the general layout of the
Library and do not require a complete orientation.
In-depth instruction will be developed for the needs of a particular class. Library instruction is most beneficial when it coincides with a classroom assignment. Advance notice is necessary in order for the staff to prepare the specialized materials that may be needed for such a presentation. Instructors are encouraged to schedule training sessions so that multiple classes do not try to use a small number of research terminals at the same time. Please contact the Librarian or Reference Assistant for scheduling or questions. See also some Tips for Library Assignment.
Library Orders
Books, audiovisual and computer software and periodicals
ordered for inclusion in the Library generally come out of
the Library's budget. The Library staff will inform
faculty members of the availability of new materials they
have ordered as soon as the items have been completely
processed.

Online Resources
WYLDCAT on the Web is the online catalog for the Gillette College and Sheridan College Griffith
Memorial Libraries. WYLDCAT is also a statewide system used
by the public and community college libraries in the
state.
Find specifics on the library webpages, call or stop in. WYLDCAT includes an electronic catalog of local and statewide library holdings. More than 50 databases include indexing and full-text of academic and general interest periodicals. Downloadable eAudiobooks, eBooks, online music and other Internet formats are available.
Help for Part-time Instructors
Part-time instructors, especially those who may teach only
one evening class per week, should plan well ahead.
Requests for orientations, tours, or other special
services should be made prior to the date you plan to use
these services.
The Library has limited staff at night and on weekends. Therefore, certain requests or problems may require that you visit or call the Library during regular daytime hours in order to contact the personnel best able to help you.
Research Assistance
The Library staff is available to assist you in using the
collections.
Reserve Procedures
Faculty members may place any library or personal
materials on reserve by filling out a form available at
the circulation desk. Reserve materials are of two types: items which
may be used only in the Library and items which may be
checked for a longer period. If a number of students are
to use the material, it is suggested that it be placed on
Library Only reserve.
It is recommended that all personal copies be placed on Library Only reserve. If a personal copy is lost or damaged by a student, the Library cannot be responsible. Insofar as allowed by copyright law, short articles may be photocopied and placed in folders to be kept on reserve. Multiple copies may be placed on reserve, according to the copyright legislation, as long as the copying meets the tests of brevity, spontaneity, and cumulative effect. Check with the Librarian for further published information on the law, or check out online copyright information. note: Please remember to remove materials from reserve when they are no longer needed by students.
Special Collections
The Gordon Ward Special Collections Room, located in the lower level of the Griffith Memorial Building, includes rare books, letters, manuscripts and various artifacts. Antique silver belonging to the Perkins Foundation is on display, along with materials from the Wyoming Collegiate Institute, and costumes worn by Count Frederick Thorne-Rider as a member of the papal court of Pope Pius XI. Special Collections may be viewed by appointment with the Librarian at Griffith Memorial Library.
Technology
A selection of audiovisual and computer software is
available in the Library. Audiovisual carrels and computers on which to
view or hear CDs and DVD or VHS
videos are available in the Library. Twenty-seven computers, a black and white and a color printer are located in the Library for
student use. Two computer stations are available for public use unless those computers are needed for students.
