The Griffith Memorial Library participates in state,
regional and national interlibrary loan exchanges to
facilitate research for students and employees. The
interlibrary loan system recognizes that no library can
afford to have all the materials its patrons need for
their education and continuing research.
Patrons are encouraged to use the interlibrary loan
system when it is necessary, but are asked to seek
answers to questions from materials already held by the
library prior to placing an interlibrary loan request.
Library staff are available to help with this process.
The Griffith Memorial Library endorses the principles
relating to interlibrary loan included in the Wyoming
Interlibrary Loan Policies and Practices Code (LINK NO LONGER AVAILABLE DUE TO STATEWIDE TRANSITION TO NEW INTERLIBRARY LOAN SOFTWARE),
the Bibliographic Center for Research Interlibrary Loan
Code (http://www.bcr.org/resourcesharing/illcd.html),
the ALA Interlibrary Loan Code
(http://www.iun.edu/~lib/alaillco.htm), and U.S.
Copyright Law.

Loan Materials
The following materials are NOT generally available
through interlibrary loan:

Patrons can access those materials far more quickly
by visiting the county, school or health library in
person. Exceptions are made for those without
transportation or other handicapping conditions.
-
Reference books
-
Manuscripts, rare, archival and other
non-circulating books
-
Periodical issues (photocopies of specific articles
may be requested)

Items in high demand at the lending library (best

-
Audio-visual materials
-
Textbooks
-
Computer software
-
Bulky or fragile materials which are difficult to
ship (such as multi-volume sets)

Turnaround
Time
Interlibrary loans are generally processed with 48
hours; the time needed for an item to be received
depends upon the proximity of the lending library and
the availability of the item at the library which owns
the item. A general expectation is that interlibrary
loans will be available seven to ten days after the
request is submitted; exceptions occur.
top
Notification
Patrons are notified that an interlibrary loan request
is available by mail, phone or e-mail depending on how
they ask to be informed.
top
Charges
-
Because interlibrary loan is considered a service
for students and employees, no service charge is
assessed by Griffith Memorial Library. The
interlibrary loan staff will try to borrow materials
from libraries that do not charge a fee. In the
event that the material is only available from a
library that charges a fee, the library staff will
notify the requestor of any fees; the requester will
have the option of withdrawing the request, or if
the requester chooses to proceed with the request,
s/he will be responsible for payment of all fees
incurred by writing a check made payable to the
library which provided the requested materials.
-
The requesting patron is responsible for all costs
associated with replacements and estimated value if
the patron loses or damages the item.

Interlibrary
Loan Etiquette
-
Each library sets its own local policies
-
Interlibrary loans are library-to-library
transactions.
-
The lending library determines the loan period and
renewals are often not an option
-
The lending library may impose a transaction charge
-
The borrowing library determines which library to
ask for the loan
-
A lending library can refuse to lend anything it
expects to be in high demand.
-
The borrowing library and requesting patron is
expected to return the item in the same condition as
it was when received.
-
Materials procured on interlibrary loan are for
research purposes only
-
The copyright laws apply to most things borrowed. It
is the responsibility of the borrowing patron to
assume all copyright limitations and costs.
