Library Services: Gillette College Library
Circulation
Library cards are issued to all users. Library cards
must be present in order for any material to be borrowed.
This card is recognized as a state-wide card at WYLD
libraries. Each library will set their own loan period
restrictions. Faculty and staff may check out materials
for a semester's time, subject to recall. If the
needed material has already been checked out, patrons may
ask that a "hold" be placed on it upon its
return. The Library staff will notify the requestor as
soon as the material becomes available.
Students and members of the community may check out books for four (4) weeks and periodicals for one (1) week. The circulation periods for other materials vary.
Film and Video Rentals
Rental films may be ordered through the Library. Rental
may be a desirable option for material needed only
occasionally. Call extension 1453 for more information.
Interlibrary Loan
General Interlibrary Loan services are provided only to
students and employees of the Gillette College. An
exception is made for federal publications related
interlibrary loans. Books, articles and other materials
not in the Library collections can be obtained from other
libraries in the region through interlibrary loan. Request
forms are found at the circulation desk or may be made
from within the WYLDCAT system. Please provide as much
information as possible about material being requested
(source, author, year, etc.).
You will be notified as soon as the material arrives (generally 7-10 days), depending on the location of the lending library. Your request should be made well in advance of the date the material is needed. Usually, other libraries will not lend periodicals--copies of articles will be sent instead. Audiovisual materials are generally not available through interlibrary loan. Charges for interlibrary loan materials must be paid by the requestor. University of Wyoming and Regis University students should avail themselves of interlibrary loan services from those colleges. Information about accessing UW or Regis University services for distance education students is available from your college or from the staff at Gillette College Library.
Library Use Instruction
The Library staff will provide, on short notice, a brief
walk-through of the Library; this may be useful to classes
which only need to know only the general layout of the
Library and do not require a complete orientation.
In-depth instruction will be developed for the needs of a particular class. Library instruction is most beneficial when it coincides with a classroom assignment. Advance notice is necessary in order for the staff to prepare the specialized materials that may be needed for such a presentation. Instructors are encouraged to schedule training sessions so that multiple classes do not try to use a small number of research terminals at the same time. Please contact the Librarian for scheduling or questions. See also some Tips for Library Assignment.
Orders for Library Material
Books, audiovisual and computer software and periodicals
ordered for inclusion in the Library generally come out of
the Library's budget. The Library staff will inform
faculty members of the availability of new materials they
have ordered as soon as the items have been completely
processed.

Online Resources
WYLDCAT on the Web is the online catalog for the NWCCD
Libraries in Gillette and Sheridan. WYLDCAT is also a statewide system used
by the public and community college libraries in the
state.
Students and employees can access WYLDCAT from their home computer via their campus computer account. WYLDCAT includes an electronic catalog of local and statewide library holdings. Online databases include several databases which index and abstract academic and general interest periodicals (including business and health information). Many articles are available in full-text. Databases available include: EBSCOhost, Gale Literature Resource Center, WilsonWeb, SIRS Researcher, Encyclopedia Britannica Online, and UW Library Catalog (University of Wyoming library catalog). Locally purchased databases include:LexisNexis Academic, College Source Online and others. See the databases lists.
Help for Part-time Instructors
Part-time instructors, especially those who may teach only
one evening class per week, should plan well ahead.
Requests for orientations, tours, or other special
services should be made prior to the date you plan to use
these services.
The Library has limited staff at night and on weekends. Therefore, certain requests or problems may require that you visit or call the Library during regular daytime hours in order to contact the personnel best able to help you.
Research Assistance
The Library staff is available to assist you in using the
collections. Up to one hour of direct research assistance
may be accorded patrons who are physically unable to come
to the Library.
Reserve Procedures
Faculty members may place any library or personal
materials on reserve by filling out a form available at
the circulation desk. Reserve materials are of two types:
items which may be used only in the Library and items
which may be checked for a longer period. If a number of
students are to use the material, it is suggested that it
be placed on Library Only reserve.
It is recommended that all personal copies be placed on Library Only reserve. If a personal copy is lost or damaged by a student, the Library cannot be responsible. Insofar as allowed by copyright law, short articles may be photocopied and placed in folders to be kept on reserve. Multiple copies may be placed on reserve, according to the copyright legislation, as long as the copying meets the tests of brevity, spontaneity, and cumulative effect. Check with the Librarian for further published information on the law, or check out online copyright information. note: Please remember to remove materials from reserve when they are no longer needed by students. Materials on reserve will be removed from the reserve shelves at the end of each semester unless the instructor specifically requests that they remain on reserve.
Technology
Gillette College Library has audio visual equipment to view
videos, audio cassettes and microforms. Tape recorders,
VHS camcorders, projectors, calculators and a CD/cassette
player can be checked out for academic use.
