The Arctic system is undergoing rapid change relative to global averages. Warmer air temperatures and changes in precipitation patterns effect hydrologic processes and the integrity of permafrost; these changes are expected to continue or amplify in the future. What do we observe today that shows evidence of change in permafrost? What are the anticipated effects of these changes? In this talk I will show examples of changing permafrost systems where geophysical measurements have revealed new insights into subsurface processes. I will review recent work on permafrost thaw below Arctic lakes, lake expansion, and ecosystem-protected permafrost.
